A reclaimed Gaylord box wins for most industrial use cases. Not all of them. Here are five real cases where we would tell you, honestly, to buy new corrugate instead.

Case 1: retail-shelf display

If your packaging is going to live on a retail shelf where the consumer sees it, you want new. Any scuff, label residue, repair tape, or printed-over branding telegraphs "used" in a way that hurts your brand impression. Pay for new corrugate, control the print, ship it clean.

Case 2: regulated food-contact primary packaging

Primary food-contact packaging — the layer directly touching the food — needs to be new and FDA-compliant. Reclaimed is not the answer here. The chain-of-custody and food-safety documentation requirements are too strict.

Case 3: pharmaceutical secondary packaging

Same logic as food primary, with additional regulatory layers. The packaging audit trail required by FDA and DEA for controlled substances is incompatible with the audit profile of reclaimed corrugate.

Case 4: single-trip catastrophic-damage avoidance

Some products are so high-value-density that any structural failure of the packaging is unrecoverable. Microelectronics, surgical instruments, certain laboratory chemicals. The marginal cost of new packaging is small compared to the cost of one ruined shipment.

Case 5: the receiver specifies it in writing

If your customer's packaging spec requires new corrugate and is willing to enforce that requirement, the conversation is over. The economics and sustainability arguments cannot override a contractual specification, and a violation will cost you more than reclaimed saved you.

Outside these five cases

The default should be reclaimed. We will sell you new if you really need it — we have a custom-build operation for exactly that purpose. But the asymmetry of the cost case favors reclaimed for the long tail of industrial use, and the asymmetry of the carbon case favors it even more.

If you are not sure which side of the line your use case falls on, email us. We will tell you straight.
